Urdu belongs to the Indo-Aryan language family (which includes Bengali and Punjabi) and is closely related to and mutually intelligible with Hindi. Developing on the Indian subcontinent, it dates back to the 12th century and uses a modified form of Perso-Arabic script known as Nastaliq.
Layout Requirements
Translating from English, which is written from left-to-right, to Urdu, which is written from right-to-left, often poses certain formatting challenges. Text alignment will need to be reversed and tables and graphics reordered. The Nastaliq script used in Urdu may require font adaptation and specific character encoding so that the translated text displays properly. For example, your chosen font may not be available for Urdu or may not give the same effect as in English.
In addition, in website translation, when characters aren’t properly encoded, they may display as blank boxes or another substitute character. These can make the text difficult to read and don’t look very professional. Having a native linguist take care of your Urdu formatting avoids embarrassing mistakes like this.
