German to English Junior Translator

We are currently seeking a full-time German to English Junior Translator to work in house at our Nottingham office.

You will fulfil the following essential requirements:

  • Native speaker of English
  • At least a 2:1 Bachelor’s degree in German
  • Excellent, demonstrable translation skills and English writing style
  • Sound IT skills
  • Flexibility
  • Attention to detail
  • An ability to grasp new concepts quickly, take the initiative and work independently
  • Very good time management skills
  • A thorough and rigorous approach

You will also ideally have one or more of the following:

  • An MA in translation studies
  • An excellent command (at least university level) of a second foreign language, preferably French
  • Experience in translation and the translation industry, including computer-aided translation (CAT) software
  • Experience in writing English-language copy, e.g. in journalism or a similar field

The position entails the following main responsibilities:

  • Translating texts on a wide variety of different subjects
  • Working to a high level of accuracy and with an output averaging up to 2,000 words per day
  • Using a variety of CAT tools and other translation resources
  • Liaising efficiently with project managers and fellow translators to produce high-quality results
  • Handling queries and other feedback from clients in both English and German

As you gain more experience, you will also have the opportunity to:

  • Develop specific expertise in a number of subject areas
  • Proofread the work of other internal and external translators
  • Assist in the management of translation projects

Start date: 1 April 2019 or by arrangement.

  • An ability to grasp new concepts quickly, take the initiative and work independently
  • Very good time management skills
  • A thorough and rigorous approach
  • Good appraisal and feedback skills

You will also ideally have one or more of the following:

  • An MA in translation studies
  • An excellent command (at least university level) of a second foreign language, preferably French
  • Experience in writing English-language copy, e.g. in journalism or a similar field
  • Experience in training or mentoring staff, ideally other translators

The position entails the following main responsibilities:

  • Translating texts on a wide variety of different subjects, offering a number of subject specialisms
  • Working to a high level of accuracy and with an output of approximately 2,000–2,500 words per day
  • Proofreading the work of other internal and external translators
  • Using a variety of CAT tools and other translation resources
  • Liaising efficiently with project managers and fellow translators to produce high-quality results
  • Handling queries and other feedback from clients in both English and German
  • Maintaining in-house translation resources (glossaries and translation memories)

As you gain more experience, you will also have the opportunity to:

  • Manage translation projects
  • Help to train interns and work experience students
  • Represent the company at university talks and similar events

We are currently recruiting freelance German to English translators and proofreaders specialising in engineering, IT, financial, legal, medical or marketing texts. If you are an experienced and motivated mother-tongue English freelance translator who fulfils one of the following experience criteria and has a solid translation background, you could be joining our freelance team:

  • a Bachelor’s degree in translation or modern languages (or equivalent) plus three years of full-time translation experience (two years if gained in house);
  • a Master’s degree in translation studies (or equivalent) plus two years of full-time professional translation experience (one year if gained in house);
  • five years of full-time professional translation experience.

We are continuously building our team of linguists. If you are an experienced and motivated native-speaker freelance translator who fulfils one of the following experience criteria, you could be joining our freelance team:

  • a Bachelor’s degree in translation or modern languages (or equivalent) plus three years of full-time translation experience (two years if gained in house);
  • a Master’s degree in translation studies (or equivalent) plus two years of full-time professional translation experience (one year if gained in house);
  • five years of full-time professional translation experience.

You will also need to specialise in engineering, financial, legal, medical or related marketing texts and be a competent user of Trados Studio 2014-2019 and/or MemoQ (own licence).

Internship and work experience opportunities

Internship and work experience opportunities

We offer four-week translation internships each summer to students and graduates of Modern Languages and Translation Studies who are interested in working as a translator.

We also offer one-week work experience placements to school or university students who are interested in finding out more about working in the translation industry.
